InstaReview: The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi

"I couldn't figure out if something was wrong with me or if this was just my life - if this was just how people felt, like concrete was dragging their flesh off their bones."

The ending is in the title, and in more ways than one, the ending is just the beginning of this book. The rich prose in this novel tells the story of Vivek, a misunderstood youth who struggles with identity and acceptance in Nigerian culture. Vivek suffers from blackouts that disconnect him from reality and endures indiginities in many aspects of life, including his love-life. Despite knowing how it ends, you still aren't prepared for the heartbreak. We have no complaints about this heartwrenching book, so 5 stars from us!
